A novel anaerobic fluidized membrane bioreactor system: Improving process performance and fouling control

In this study, the effectiveness of a novel system an anaerobic fluidized membrane bioreactor (AnFMBR) in treating wastewater was demonstrated and results were validated by testing duplicate systems parallel under similar operating conditions. system, outer loop performs as reactor while inner serves AnFMBR with granular activated carbon (GAC) used carrier for fouling control. The GAC fluidization is restricted to minimize operational energy ensuring scouring. Fluidized key factor maintaining low TMP attracting biofilm formation thus reducing attachment surface removing deposits from via abrasion. new improved control reflected slower buildup transmembrane pressure (TMP) resulting 1.5 3.8 folds increase typically reported periods bioreactors (AnMBRs) AnFMBRs. Similarly, requirements estimated at 52 94% lower than those typical AnMBRs aerobic MBRs, respectively. At validation level, both exhibited performance respect several indicators including microbial community composition, methane yield, chemical oxygen demand removal, TMP, savings. • A tested reuse recovery. Improved periods. Energy decreased relative other MBRs studies. Exoelectrogens population abundant favoring production. High reproducibility recorded validating results.
